Vietnam e-visa for Indians
Indians need an e-visa, applied for online on Vietnam’s official portal (evisa.gov.vn). It allows stays of up to 90 days; the government fee is US$25 for single entry and US$50 for multiple entry. Processing usually takes 3–5 working days, so apply at least two weeks before you fly. You will need a passport valid for six months, a passport-style photo and a scan of your passport’s photo page. Use only the official portal – many look-alike websites charge extra.
Best time to visit Vietnam
Vietnam is long and narrow, so the weather differs by region:
- North (Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Sapa): October to April – cool, dry and clear; December–February can be chilly.
- Central (Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue): February to August is sunny beach season; September to December brings heavy rains.
- South (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc): December to April is dry and sunny.
For a north-to-south trip, February to April is the sweet spot when all three regions are pleasant.
Fly into Hanoi, out of Ho Chi Minh City – and you will never waste a day backtracking.
An 8-day itinerary
- Days 1–2, Ho Chi Minh City: city tour, War Remnants Museum, Ben Thanh Market, Cu Chi Tunnels and a Mekong Delta day trip.
- Days 3–4, Da Nang & Hoi An: Ba Na Hills and the Golden Bridge, Marble Mountains, evening in Hoi An’s lantern-lit old town.
- Days 5–7, Hanoi & Ha Long Bay: Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake, then a day or overnight cruise on Ha Long Bay.
- Day 8: Departure from Hanoi.

The currency is the Vietnamese dong (VND); carry some US dollars to exchange and use cards in cities. Buy a local SIM or eSIM on arrival for maps and ride-hailing apps. Domestic flights between Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and Hanoi are short and save a lot of time.
Getting there
Direct flights connect Delhi with Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in about five hours, so you can start in the north and fly home from the south (or the other way round) without backtracking. Da Nang in the centre is a one-hour domestic flight from either city.
