Sri Lanka packs so much into one small island. The morning mist over Nuwara Eliya’s tea gardens. The blue train winding through the hills. Elephants by a river in the evening. And at the end, a palm-fringed beach where the only plan is the sunset.

Visa for Indians

Indian travellers receive a free Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for a 30-day stay. Apply online on Sri Lanka’s official ETA website a few days before you fly; approval usually comes within a day or two.

02

A 7-night itinerary

  1. Kandy (2 nights): the Temple of the Tooth, the Royal Botanical Gardens and a Kandyan dance show; stop at the Pinnawala elephant orphanage on the way.
  2. Nuwara Eliya (2 nights): tea estates and factory visit, Gregory Lake, and the Ramayana-linked Seetha Amman Temple and Ashok Vatika.
  3. Bentota (2 nights): beach time, a Madu River boat safari and a turtle hatchery.
  4. Colombo (1 night): Galle Face Green, shopping and departure.
Take the hill-country train from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya – it is one of the most beautiful rides in the world.

When to go

Sri Lanka has two monsoons. The west and south coasts and the hill country are best from December to April. The east coast (Trincomalee, Pasikudah) is best from May to September. That means there is always a good side of the island to visit.
