Picture this: you wake to the sound of water lapping under your floor. You open the curtains and the lagoon is so clear you can see fish drifting past. Breakfast floats to you on a tray. That is a Maldives honeymoon – and it is closer to Delhi than most people think.

How the Maldives works

The Maldives is a chain of tiny coral islands. Most resorts sit on their own private island – one island, one hotel. So when you choose a resort, you are choosing your whole world for the trip: the beach, the restaurants, the reef and the mood.

You land at Malé airport and the resort team meets you. From there you reach your island by speedboat (for resorts close to Malé) or by seaplane (for the far, quieter atolls). Seaplanes fly only in daylight, so late-night arrivals stay a night near the airport first.

02

Overwater villa or beach villa?

An overwater villa stands on stilts above the lagoon, with steps straight into the sea. It is the classic honeymoon picture – and worth it for at least part of the stay. A beach villa opens onto soft sand and shade, and often feels more private. Many couples split the stay: two nights on the beach, two over the water.

In the Maldives, the island is the holiday. Choose the right one and everything else falls into place.

When to go

December to April is the dry season: calm seas, blue skies and the best visibility for snorkelling. May to November brings passing showers and some windy days, but also lush greenery, fewer guests and lower resort prices. Rain usually comes in short bursts, then the sun returns.

Little things that make it special

Ask for a sandbank picnic, a sunset dolphin cruise or a dinner on the beach under lanterns. Tell the resort it is your honeymoon – many add a cake, flowers or a decorated bed. And keep one evening free to simply sit on your deck and watch the sky turn orange.

FAQ

Questions travellers ask

Do Indians need a visa for the Maldives?

No advance visa is needed. Indians receive a free 30-day visa on arrival with a confirmed hotel booking, return ticket and valid passport.

Is the Maldives good in the monsoon?

Yes, for value. May to November has short showers and some windy days, but resorts are quieter and prices are lower.

How many nights are enough?

Four to six nights is ideal. Many couples split the stay between a beach villa and an overwater villa.
