Begin with the Ho Chi Minh Complex, including the mausoleum (closed on Mondays and Fridays), his former stilt-house residence and the Presidential Palace.

Visit the Temple of Literature, built in 1070 to honour Confucius and later Vietnam's first royal university, where stone stelae on carved tortoises record the names of scholars who passed the imperial exams. Its lawns, gardens and lotus ponds make a peaceful escape from the city bustle.

In the afternoon, visit the Museum of Ethnology (closed on Mondays, when the History Museum is visited instead), with colourful displays and traditional houses of Vietnam's many ethnic groups.

In the evening, enjoy a water puppet show and a stroll along the walking street to discover Hanoi by night.
