Overview

A slow-travel journey through the lesser-known hills of North Bengal. Two nights in the village of Sittong give you time for birding at Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary and Latpanchar, the views from Ahaldara and the quiet forest lake of Namthing Pokhri., Next comes Darjeeling, with its mountaineering institute, zoo and tea gardens and a sunrise at Tiger Hill, before a final night at Lamahatta, close to the viewpoints of Tinchuley and the Peshok tea gardens. Warm homestays and a hill hotel, with meals included, make it ideal for nature lovers.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at Bagdogra / NJP – Sittong

Pick-up from Bagdogra Airport or New Jalpaiguri Railway Station and drive to Sittong, about two hours away. Check in and relax at your homestay.

Overnight: Sittong

Day 2: Sittong Full-Day Sightseeing

After an early breakfast, drive to Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, then on to Latpanchar, whose nursery area is another well-known birding spot. Continue to Ahaldara, also known as Tagore Hill, for views of the surrounding hills and the Teesta river, and then Namthing Pokhri, a Himalayan lake where the rare Himalayan newt breeds. Return to the homestay for lunch.

Overnight: Sittong

Day 3: Sittong – Darjeeling with City Tour

After breakfast, drive to Darjeeling, the Queen of the Hills. Check in, freshen up and set out on a half-day city tour covering the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park (closed on Thursdays), Tenzing Rock, a tea garden and the Japanese Temple. Later, enjoy the town at leisure.

Overnight: Darjeeling

Day 4: Tiger Hill – Lamahatta via Tinchuley

Early in the morning, visit Tiger Hill for sunrise over Mount Kanchenjunga, stopping at Ghoom Monastery and Batasia Loop on the way back. After breakfast, drive to Lamahatta with sightseeing at Lamahatta Eco Park, Tinchuley Viewpoint, Lover's Point and Peshok Tea Garden. The evening is free.

Overnight: Lamahatta

Day 5: Departure – Bagdogra / NJP

After breakfast, transfer to Bagdogra Airport or New Jalpaiguri Railway Station for your onward journey.
