Overview

Head into Odisha's wild heart on this nature-lover's journey to two of India's most remarkable protected areas. In Bhitarkanika, a Ramsar wetland of mangrove creeks, a Forest Department approved country boat takes you through the waterways, and you stay at the Dangamal Nature Camp in the middle of the forest., The trail then moves inland to the Similipal reserve with its thundering Barehipani, Uski and Joranda waterfalls, jungle safaris and the Chahala zone. Bookended by the temples, caves and museums of Bhubaneswar and the ancient Buddhist sites of Ratnagiri, Udayagiri and Lalitgiri, it is a well-rounded taste of wildlife, heritage and culture.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Bhubaneswar – Bhubaneswar Sightseeing

On arrival at Bhubaneswar Railway Station or Airport in the morning, our driver will meet you and transfer you to the hotel. After checking in and freshening up, explore Nandankanan Zoo, the Khandagiri and Udayagiri caves and the Tribal Museum (closed on Mondays). Lunch on the way (own cost).

Explore Bhubaneswar's local market in the evening.

Overnight: Bhubaneswar

Day 2: Bhubaneswar – Buddhist Sites – Bhitarkanika

After breakfast, check out and drive towards Bhitarkanika, visiting the Buddhist monasteries and stupas of Ratnagiri, Udayagiri and Lalitgiri on the way.

After checking in and lunch at the camp, enjoy a cruise on a Forest Department approved country boat with panoramic views of the Ramsar wetland (boating at own cost).

Overnight: Dangamal Nature Camp, Bhitarkanika

Day 3: Bhitarkanika – Similipal Waterfalls – Chahala

In the morning, walk to the old hunting tower once favoured by the former kings, then return to the camp for breakfast and check out.

Drive to Similipal. At Jashipur Gate, the forest entry permit is taken and you change to an SUV to enter the reserve (SUV and permit at own cost). Check in at the nature camp and have lunch.

Visit the beautiful Barehipani, Uski and Joranda waterfalls, with the option of a jungle safari in the reserve, followed by a visit to the Chahala zone.

Overnight: Barehipani Nature Camp, Similipal

Day 4: Similipal – Bhubaneswar

After breakfast, check out and drive back to Bhubaneswar. Check in at the hotel and relax for the rest of the day.

Day 5: Bhubaneswar Temples – Departure

After breakfast, check out and visit Lingaraj Temple, Rajarani Temple, Mukteswar Temple and Ananta Basudev Temple. Explore the local market if time permits. Lunch on the way (own cost).

Drop at Bhubaneswar Railway Station or Airport for your onward journey.
