Overview

This grand loop shows you every side of Rwanda by private four-wheel drive with your own driver guide. Begin with Kigali's Parliament museum, markets and the Kigali Genocide Memorial, then spend a full day on safari in Akagera National Park in search of the Big Five. Next, drive south via Huye (Butare) and one of its museums to the ancient montane rainforest of Nyungwe National Park., In Nyungwe you can pick from the thrilling canopy walk, guided birding, colobus monkey tracking or forest waterfall trails before continuing to Rubavu on Lake Kivu. The highlight comes at the end, with the chance to trek mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park before returning to Kigali. Gorilla permits and Nyungwe activity fees are purchased separately.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali

On arrival at Kigali International Airport, you are met by your driver guide and transferred to your hotel to check in.

Overnight: Kigali

Day 2: Kigali City Tour

After breakfast, your driver guide meets you at the hotel for a Kigali city tour including the Parliament museum, local markets and the Kigali Genocide Memorial at Gisozi, among other sites. Lunch is at own cost.

Overnight: Kigali

Day 3: Kigali – Akagera National Park

Leave very early for the three-hour drive to Akagera National Park and enjoy a full day of game drives in the park.

Overnight: Akagera National Park

Day 4: Akagera – Kigali

Spend another day on game drives in Akagera, then return to Kigali in the late afternoon.

Day 5: Kigali – Huye (Butare) – Nyungwe National Park

In the morning, set off on the six-hour drive to Nyungwe National Park, stopping in Huye (Butare) to visit one of its museums. Lunch at own cost in Huye before continuing your journey.

Overnight: Nyungwe National Park

Day 6: Nyungwe Forest Activities – Rubavu

Choose your Nyungwe experience (at extra cost, each with a full-day guide): the canopy walk, guided birding, colobus and other primate tracking, or a trail to the tropical waterfalls. After lunch, transfer to Rubavu on Lake Kivu.

Day 7: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park – Kigali

After an early breakfast, drive about one and a half hours to the Volcanoes National Park office for the seven o'clock gorilla trekking briefing. Drive to the starting trail; after the trek your driver takes you to a nearby local restaurant for lunch. Trekking is permitted only from fifteen years of age, and the gorilla permit is not included.

Return to Kigali and check in at your hotel.

Day 8: Departure from Kigali

Transfer to the airport for your departure flight.
